HEALTH FACTS

Body- Mind-Spirit Health Tips

Do you feel dragged down by the end of the day? Do you find yourself slouching?

The discs in our spine create space between the vertebrae. During our standing and waking hours, gravity pulls down on our bodies compressing the discs. When we sleep at night, they get pumped up again, with a new fluid supply.

Scar tissue can grow and affect posture and mobility.  Scar tissue can be released through massage or Rolfing. Does scar tissue growing around a joint or in other parts of the body as a result of an injury or operation restrict your mobility? Seek out practitioners of deep tissue massage or Rolfing (touch that can separate layers of fascia). Over time they can break up scar tissue and restore lost or impeded mobility.

Calcium is an important mineral for our bodies. If we don't get enough from the food we eat, calcium is leached from bones and teeth. Studies have also shown it helps to shed pounds. Remember to add magnesium and Vitamin D for proper absorption.

ARTHRITIS - Research has shown that a regular program of cardiovascular exercise and strength training leads to improvements in strength, function and joint symptoms. Flexibility loss, muscle atrophy, weakness, osteoporosis, pain, depression and fatigue responded favorably to low-moderate intensity programs and helped with weight loss.

Large waistlines, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol account for $4 of every $10 spent on prescriptions.

Bone Loss - Beginning at age 50, we start shrinking permanently, as a result of gradual compression and drying out or degeneration of the discs cushioning the bones of our spinal column.  We also lose bone density as we age. Bone density tests are important for women over 50.

Food to Avoid: Studies have shown a correlation between cola and bone loss.  Even diet soda has the same "sugar" effect on our bodies as regular soda.

Suffering from acid reflux?
Are you using artificial sweeteners? Try eliminating the artificial sweetener to see if it is causing your reflux.

Read labels and eliminate any products containing high fructose corn syrup.

DID YOU KNOW?
1/2 cup of peanut oil has 1000 calories and 108 fat grams!!!!!

We are taller in the morning than we are at night by as much as 3/4 of an inch!!!!!.

Drinking water keeps our discs hydrated and prevents us from shrinking.

Sustainable Fitness A
Goal You Can Feel Good About!
The buzz-word sustainability refers to maintaining balance in ecological, social and economic systems by regenerating resources. Sustainable fitness means maintaining our health through the rejuvenating benefits of exercise. It also means a lifetime of enjoyable activity.

Many of us have health goals for the New Year and set out for the treadmills in earnest after the holidays. However, attendance at fitness centers typically drops off by March, due to unrealistic goals and boredom.

So, what is a good goal, and how can you sustain your interest in fitness?

The primary goal should not be to lose weight or lower cholesterol, but to have fun. Choosing activities you enjoy is the key to long-term fitness. Whether you like traditional sports such as tennis and golf, or the simple pleasure of walking with friends or walking the dog, do something fun and invigorating. Health clubs and community centers also offer interesting activities such as chi-walking, contra-dancing, martial arts and Nia Fitness classes. Check your local papers or online event calendars. Try different activities until you find yourself saying, I love this!

Help your kids discover what they enjoy. For many children and teens, Physical Education (PE) is not fun. It is a source of stress, either constant pressure to win or constant humiliation. It is no wonder that many people grow up hating to exercise. When I was a kid, PE focused on drills, or dodging and throwing objects ...activities which didn't interest me or suit me physically. But after school I played a mean game of kick-the-can, or made up dance routines with friends.

Help your kids get a good start to a life of sustainable fitness by encouraging activities they like, and let them enjoy it for the sake of fun. Appreciate your body type to find an activity that suits you, and help your child discover his or her forte. Those with slender frames by nature often don't have great endurance and brute strength, but do well in activities involving balance and flexibility, such as Yoga, dance, and Tai Chi. Those with heavier frames do well in sports which emphasize endurance and strength, such as running, aerobics, rowing and other vigorous exercise.

Choose an activity that is energizing. The old no pain, no gain approach to exercise is stressful, and ultimately leads to injury or burnout:  the opposite of health. Even the right activity can be harmful if done to the point of exhaustion, which is an unbalanced use of our body's energy resource.

Remember, sustainable means regenerative.

The Joy of Movement is the secret of fitness, according to Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas, fitness educators who, 26 years ago, co-founded the Nia Technique:  a fusion of dance, martial arts and healing arts. Exercise that is done strictly for its own physical sake, divorced from the emotions and human spirit, isn't satisfying, isn't fun, and eventually fails. To feel good enough to last a lifetime, an exercise regimen must satisfy the heart and soul. 1

Obesity is an epidemic weight
Every extra pound of weight translates to 4 pounds of extra impact on our knees and feet. We are now looking at a generation of children who will not outlive their parents because lifespans are shortening due to the dis-eases that result from obesity. Research indicates that soon heart attacks will be striking 16-18 year olds.

The good news is that we have to eat to lose weight; but we have to eat properly. 71% of men are overweight, 61% of women and 33% of children. Excess weight translates into shortening life expectancy by 5 years.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION - too few hours - can cause hormonal changes that lead to weight gain.

MORE MEDICATIONS - Antidepressants, anticonvulsants and steroid hormones cause weight gain, either by water retention or increased appetite.

OLDER BIRTH MOMS - Studies show an adolescent girl's risk of becoming obese increases by 14% for every five-year increment in maternal age. PRENATAL INFLUENCES - Overweight moms and those with gestational diabetes have been linked with bigger babies

weightWe hear over and over about the importance of drinking water and fluids to keep ourselves hydrated. Don't forget that fruits and vegetables contain water, as well as tea and juices. Our bodies need fluid to keep functioning properly, and one of these functions is the health of the discs in our back. Dehydration will desiccate or dry up the discs resulting in degeneration and loss of height.

Metabolic Syndrome - what is it?
Do you have it? What can you do?
Various reports show at least 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 8 children have it.  Key causes are overeating and inactivity. The number of people over 40 rose by more than 60% over the past 10 years.

Trying to lose weight? weight
Are you eating enough?
Are you fueling your body before exercise with a combination of protein and carbohydrate?

No body can effectively utilize calories on an empty stomach.  Eat something small before you exercise to trigger the release of energy from your system. Breakfast is important. It is very hard for your body to draw the fuel it needs to exercise from a depleted glycogen source.

Do you put off physical activity because you are too tired ?

Chances are you are not physically, but MENTALLY, tired.  Surprise yourself and see how refreshed you feel after a bit of activity.  A second wind can be retrieved by walking, going to the gym or participating in a class: yoga, pilates, belly dance, Nia.

Movement automatically brings more oxygen into our bodies, it circulates fresh energetic red blood and wakes up the brain. Join your friends at our studio and have fun.
