At
Sound Mind & Body you'll look at exercise as more than a way
to lose weight
Welcome to Sound Mind &
Body, Milford's most diverse holistic fitness studio. Our programs
include a wide selection of group classes and personal
one-on-one training. We also offer nutrition and lifestyle counseling
as well as special workshops and events in various disciplines and
movement forms on an on-going basis.
We welcome men
and women of all ages and levels of physical fitness, with an emphasis
on working within one's own range of physical comfort and pleasure.
We wish to make our movement classes desirable and accessible to
senior, disabled and otherwise inactive people who want to enjoy
the benefits of a healthy, supple, flexible body. We also endeavor
to provide alternative ways of moving to students with high levels
of physical fitness, as well as athletes wishing to improve their
performance in their own sport.
Our programs are
varied, but the goal is the same: to nurture and restore bodies,
soothe minds and inspire spirits of those ready to awaken to a greater
level of health and well-being through movement. In an open community
of kindred spirits who come together regularly to dance, sweat,
learn, play and meditate, we are continuously amazed by ourselves
and each other.
Our comfortable 2,000 sq. ft. studio
is conveniently located at Boston Post Road and West River Street.
Ample free parking is available. We operate much like a dance studio
in that we are only open during our class times. If you would like
to stop by the studio, instructors are available a few minutes before
and after class. Otherwise, the best way to talk with someone is
to leave a phone message or use email.

Our Yoga
for Everybody classes are recommended for students with
some prior yoga experience. They incorporate a blend of Pranyama
(breath), Dhyana (meditation), Dharana (inner focus) and Asana
(physical postures).
Each class combines
elements of Kripalu Yoga, Vinyasa
Yoga and Yin Yoga.
Kripalu
Yoga focuses on the mechanics of Yoga - proper breath and
alignment - as well as in the inner, spiritual dimensions of Yogic
practice. Students are encouraged to honor "the wisdom of
the body" and to work according to the limits of their individual
flexibility and strength.
Vinyasa
The word Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement. This technique
is sometimescalled Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth
way that the poses run together and become like a dance. Teachers
lead students through a steady flow of connected yoga postures
linked with breath work in a continuous movement.
Yin
Yoga, so named because of its correspondence to the Taoist
concept of yin, is a very distinct style of hatha yoga that stretches
the connective tissue (joints) rather than conditioning the muscles,
the latter being the aim of most other styles of hatha yoga.
The teacher will instruct you to hold passive asanas for several
minutes each. It is the ideal method of physical conditioning
for prolonged meditation.
Restorative
Yoga
Ideal for those just
beginning, in rehabilitation and recovery, and those living with
chronic conditions such as MS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.
You will explore the
building blocks and basic postures of yoga for strength, flexibility,
relaxation, and coordination of breath work.
Prenatal
Yoga
Prepares and guides
the body for labor and delivery through specific breathing techniques
and postures. We are associated with Yale-New Haven's Well Program
prenatal and postpartum exercise classes, incorporating relaxation,
stretching and cardio.
Chi
Ball-Yoga
Traditional Yoga poses
(Asana), periodically incorporating a 3-pound ball for additional
strength.
Stability Ball
A combination of cardio,
strength, balance and stretch using the ball, free weights, body
bars or resistance tubing. Laugh, have fun and sweat!!
Pilates
& Reformer Classes
Pilates
classes strengthen the spine, alleviate back problems, increase
muscular flexibility, reduce tension and improve joint an aid
to arthritis sufferers. Studies have shown that Pilates also
increases bone density and helps fight osteoporosis.
Breathing is improved, which aids relaxation and reduces anxiety.
Muscle strength and shape is improved for a longer leaner
look. Stronger abdominal muscles help to improve balance
and give you a flatter stomach.
Pilates is good cross-training
for any sport or activity.

Nia
is a movement journey for self-discovery, self-healing and self-mastery.
Classes
go beyond exercise -- replacing the idea of punishment with
pleasure. We teach you to look at the body as it really
is, instead of viewing it in an idealized conceptualized way.
You'll learn -- based on the design of your
body's bones, joints, muscles and connective tissue -- how to
achieve optimum power, propulsion, fitness, tone and flexibility...
without pain!
As a
comprehensive program, Nia tones and trims the body superbly
through whole-body, expressive, grounded cardiovascular movement,
rather than repetitive jogging or lifting.
A fusion
of dance, martial arts and healing arts, Nia is adaptable
to every level of fitness, every age and type of body, even
those with special limitations.
Nia
is moving consciously...living the truth of who you are.
...Nia is FUN!
As
a business, Nia Technique, Inc. provides classes,
Workshops, Training, Education and support
for Professional and Personal Growth practitioners,
as well as workout DVDS , CDs, the NiaWear

Students
say:
"I'm
in the best shape I've ever been in...This has been one of the
best life-changing things that I've ever done."
"The
first thing I noticed was that everyone in my classes learned
everyone else's name. It's amazing how you can go to conventional
fitness classes for years with the same people and never speak
to anyone...Nia is like a night out with the girls...with benefits!"
"From
my very first Nia class...I felt myself moving with grace and
creativity - things I'd never felt before in aerobics classes..."
Professionals say:
"I
love Nia. It's a total mind, body, spirit celebration."
–Christiane Northrop, M.D.,
Author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom"
"Nia
is both therapeutic and enjoyable. The movements feel
natural and open up insights and feelings that will make you
feel like you are discovering yourself in a new way."
–Bernie
Siegel, M.D., Author of "Love, Medicine and Miracles"
Each month, throughout 2010, we will focus on
one of the 13 Principles of the Nia White Belt (the first level
of Nia training).
During the month of June our focus will be on "The
Base of the Body". In addition to our routine choreography,
we will explore how Nia delivers conditioning and healing through
grounded barefoot movement.
Receive
the benefits of internal strength, control, balance and power...mental
as well as physical. Increase agility, grace and range
of motion. Experience a sense of relaxation even when
working strenuously.
Belly
Dance Classes
The
benefits of belly dance are both mental and physical. Dancing
provides a good cardiovascular workout and helps increase both
flexibility and strength, focusing on the torso or "core
muscles." Our classes emphasize muscular "isolations,"
the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently.
Veil work builds arm, shoulder, and general upper-body strength.
Belly dance is suitable for all ages and body types and can
be as physical as the participant chooses. Beginner
classes are offered by appointment. For more information, call
203/878-9642.
